2013: The Year Ahead http://www.animateprojects.org/news/2013_the_year_ahead Tue, 15 Jan 2013 00:00:01 GMT But first, a brief look back at 2012…

Animate was delighted to receive grants from Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Wellcome Trust. Renowned director Terry Gilliam joined Animate’s founders David Curtis and Clare Kitson as a Patron of the charity. We moved into the office of our supporters ais London. And we received many donations and sales through our fundraiser, CEL. A big thank you to everyone who generously supported Animate in 2012.

Online, we presented work by Thomson & Craighead, David Blandy, Sean Vicary and Richard Fenwick. Offline, over the summer we programmed a lively retrospective for Art on the Underground's vast Canary Wharf Screen. We took a selection of films and prints over to art:gwangju:12 in Korea. Animate commissioned Carolina Melis and historian Michael Ann Mullen to bring the National Trust's Ham House and Garden to life. And we brought you 2012 - five films for Channel 4’s Random Acts that portended the apocalypse (which thankfully didn’t materialise).

Very sadly, one of British animation’s major figures, Run Wrake, who made the iconic films Rabbit and Jukebox for Animate, died in October. You can read an obituary by Animate’s Gary Thomas on Sight & Sound online.

And now for this year…

We are continuing to seek funding to enable Animate to continue to exist and have our fingers crossed waiting to hear back on several vital applications. Animate will continue to develop and deliver several ambitious projects over the next 12 months, including…

Navigations

Supported by the Wellcome Trust, artists Alec Finlay and Iain Gardner are currently completing their residencies for Navigations with the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. In the summer their work will be exhibited online, in cinemas and galleries, and in healthcare sites as part of the Paintings in Hospitals Collection.

Accelerate

We launched Accelerate, our new professional and practice development strand with a panel event in October. We are working with London College of Communication to identify the industry’s changing models of production, practice, and career. There’s a survey on its way...

Oliver Harrison: The Fallen Word and collected films

We are delighted to be publishing a retrospective DVD of works by artist filmmaker Oliver Harrison. Oliver has produced three films for Animate including Apocalypse Rhyme for Random Acts. The DVD will be launched in association with the BFI Filmstore in the summer.

Channel 4 Random Acts: Secret Monsters

This year’s Random Acts slate considers the pseudo-science of cryptozoology, and features a mix of artists from the UK, Austria, Japan and the US. Look out for our monstrous shorts on your televisions and web browsers in the autumn.

Events

Animate will be spending Sunday 17 February at the BFI Future Film Festival presenting Random Act films, artist masterclasses, and with UnderWire a panel discussion showcasing women in animation. And 971 Horses + 4 Zebras will be touring to CAST in Tasmania, Phoenix Exeter in the UK, and MADA Gallery, Australia.]]>
